Ben Ming Nian: Meaning, Red Bracelets & Preparing for 2027
Ben Ming Nian (本命年) is the year when your Chinese zodiac animal returns, once every twelve years. Many families mark it by wearing red, exchanging an auspicious gift or arranging a blessing. These customs express care and hope; they do not mean that a difficult year is inevitable.
For someone born in a Goat year, 2027 brings that return. Before choosing a bracelet, check the calendar boundary, decide which custom matters to you and measure your wrist. Those three steps are more useful than buying a collection of objects out of worry.
What does Ben Ming Nian mean?
The phrase refers to your own zodiac year. If your birth-year animal is the Goat, each subsequent Goat year is your Ben Ming Nian. The animal repeats every twelve years, but the full animal-and-element combination follows a longer cycle. You do not need to share the year's element for it to be your zodiac return.
Traditional accounts often describe this as a year for greater care, reflection and protection. Some connect it with Tai Sui observances. Ben Ming Nian and all forms of Fan Tai Sui are not interchangeable: other zodiac signs may have different relationships with the year's Tai Sui. Our 2027 Tai Sui guide explains those distinctions and the optional ceremonies.
Who has Ben Ming Nian in 2027, and when does it start?
2027 is the Year of the Goat. Commonly listed Goat birth years include 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015. If you were born in January or February, check the exact boundary in your birth year before relying on that list.
The Hong Kong Observatory's 2027 calendar places Lunar New Year on 6 February 2027 and Li Chun, the Beginning of Spring, on 4 February. Popular zodiac celebrations commonly use Lunar New Year; many BaZi calculations use Li Chun. These are different calendar conventions. Near a boundary, the precise time and location matter for a personal chart.
Your Gregorian birthday and 1 January are therefore not automatic starting dates for this custom. For everyday gifting, explain which convention you are following. For an individual BaZi consultation, provide the actual birth details rather than selecting an animal from the year alone.
Why do people wear red during their zodiac year?
Red is a familiar auspicious color in Chinese celebrations. Wearing it during Ben Ming Nian carries a wish for good fortune and protection. In a personal account published by the University of Leeds' Business Confucius Institute, Ye Jing describes choosing red clothes and accessories for her zodiac year.
A bracelet is one practical way to keep that custom close. A red scarf or another item you already own can also mark the year. Family preferences differ: ask the recipient whether a gift, a particular shade or a temple observance has personal significance.
You can buy our bracelets for yourself. If giving one, a short message such as “For a steady and hopeful year ahead” explains the intention without telling the recipient to fear their birthday year. Our red string bracelet guide covers the broader symbolism and everyday wear.
How to choose a Ben Ming Nian bracelet
Start with a design you will enjoy wearing. Choose a Goat motif for a specific 2027 zodiac connection, or a red cord without an animal if you prefer something less literal.
| Style | Material and meaning | Fit and price |
|---|---|---|
| Silver Goat Red Cord Bracelet | 999 fine silver Goat charm and red woven cord; a direct connection to the returning zodiac animal. | Adult wrist fit: adjustable 14–17 cm. US$49.90. |
| Burgundy Cord with Floral Silver Clasp | Burgundy cord with supplier-described S925 silver fittings; an auspicious gift for any zodiac sign. | Finished lengths: 16, 17, 18, 19 or 20 cm. US$49.90. |
Wrist fit and finished length are different measurements. For the adjustable Goat bracelet, measure your wrist circumference. For the clasp bracelet, compare the listed finished length with a comfortable bracelet you already own. The same number is not automatically the right choice for both. Neither listing offers custom sizing.
If red is not your style, browse the bracelets by zodiac or compare obsidian styles and their meanings. An animal motif or a color alone cannot identify your personal Five Elements needs.
What does our personalized blessing include?
Each bracelet above includes personalized kaiguang consecration and blessing at Chongyang Palace (重阳宫), China, personally led by Mike Wang. Preparation uses the recipient's BaZi birth details and stated intention, such as prosperity, career, relationships or protection.
Provide the recipient's name, Gregorian birth date, local birth time if known, birthplace and intention. Write “unknown” for an unknown time; for a gift, share the recipient's details with their permission. This is a spiritual service, without guaranteed financial, relationship or health outcomes.
Allow up to 20 business days from order to delivery: 10 for sourcing and preparation, followed by up to 10 for shipping. Check delivery information before ordering for Lunar New Year.
Do you have to wear it without taking it off?
For our jewelry, follow the care instructions: remove it for bathing, swimming or activities that could catch the cord. A worn or broken cord is a reason to repair or replace jewelry, not reliable evidence of misfortune. If you follow a particular family or temple practice, ask about its instructions rather than combining unrelated rules from different traditions.
